Mysteries of the Maize God
Pictured on the cover of this year's Record of the Princeton University Art Museum is the striking image of an exquisitely painted Maya cylinder vessel. Despite excellent preservation, the idiosyncratic mythological scene on the vessel has long eluded full interpretation. New research by curator Bryan Just, also appearing in this year's Record, offers fresh insights into this complex scene and the accompanying hieroglyphic inscriptions, demonstrating that it presents a unique version of the mythic renewal of the maize god. Visit the vessel on view now in the ancient Americas galleries and confront its mysteries yourself!

Architecture as Icon: Perception and Representation of Architecture in Byzantine Art
On view through June 6
Whether you have discovered it already or not, you will not want to miss the final weeks of Architecture as Icon, the Art Museum's groundbreaking exhibition that brings together more than seventy works from twenty-two museums in seven countries. The Philadelphia Inquirer calls it "an aesthetic delight"--"a splendid introduction to icons for anyone who doesn't know much about them." Many of the precious artworks on display are unlikely to ever travel to the United States again, so this is truly a rare treat for the senses. |
